After her first year as a Planned Parenthood Peer Advocate, Matilda Berke made a commitment to using her writing to inspire, uplift, & lead. She has since been recognized by YoungArts, the 2016 Pasadena Prize in Prose, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the L.A. Tomorrow Prize, & the National Council of Teachers of English, among others.
She served a one-year tenure as a Youth Poet Ambassador of Los Angeles & has been featured as a keynote speaker at Capitol Day 2016 & Pacific Clinics' 2017 San Gabriel Valley Youth Summit. Her award-winning writing has been commissioned for fundraisers & other events across L.A. She was selected for the Adroit Journal Poetry Mentorship & the Winter Tangerine Review Poetry Internship -- at the latter, she is the founder and Creative Director of a new column called "The Night Market" focused on promoting Asian-American visibility & experiences. As a second-generation Chinese-American creative, she's committed to fighting for racial equality & promoting marginalized voices.
Outside of the literary & activist spheres, she's a classical pianist, winner of the Southern California Academy of Sciences Research Training Program grant, & former intern in the California Institute of Technology's Physics, Math, & Astronomy department. She is currently studying English, International Relations, & Economics as a freshman at Wellesley College.
